Why is fracking controversial?

Fracking is controversial because it causes potential environmental and public health risks. In addition to potential groundwater contamination, the process of pumping water, sand, and chemicals into underground shale deposits to create fractures can provoke small-scale earthquakes, pollute the air with hazardous chemicals, and deplete local fresh water resources that could be used for drinking and irrigation. It has also been linked to increased seismic activity and can disrupt ecosystems if not properly managed. It has been said that much of the controversy surrounding fracking is due to the lack of transparency and liability related to its usage as well as the potential long-term impacts that are not yet known.
