The person who first provided evidence that DNA is a genetic material was British bacteriologist Alfred Griffith in 1928. Griffith used a bacterial species called Streptococcus pneumonia to show that DNA from a virulent strain of the bacteria could be used to transform a nonvirulent strain of the bacteria into a virulent strain. This provided the first evidence that DNA is the genetic material of a bacterial species. Later, in 1952, Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase further confirmed that DNA is the genetic material by showing that DNA is the substance which is required for the process of gene transfer, which formed the basis for modern genetic engineering.
