The CIA trained and armed Cuban exiles in an effort to overthrow Castro, but they were ultimately defeated by Cuban forces in three days. The Cuban Missile Crisis was a major confrontation between the US and the Soviet Union in 1962. The Soviets had placed nuclear missiles in Cuba, and the US set up a naval blockage to prevent any additional shipments of missiles. The crisis culminated in a back-and-forth of threats and ultimatums as the situation threatened to spill into a full-fledged nuclear war. The crisis eventually ended with a compromise in which Soviet missiles were removed from Cuba in exchange for the US removing its missiles from Turkey.
