The first mainland colony to achieve a black majority population was South Carolina in 1708. At the time, South Carolina was the only mainland colony to have legalized slavery and had some of the most liberal slave codes in the entire British Empire. As a result, large numbers of enslaved people were brought to South Carolina to be bought and sold in the slave trade. The slave population quickly grew to outnumber the European population, giving South Carolina the distinction of becoming the first mainland colony with a black majority population.
