Describe the identifiable physical properties of substances and explain how changes in these properties can occur without changing the chemical nature of the substance. Mass & density are 2 properties of matter. When water freezes it expands making it less dense yet it is still water. When iron is heated it expands until it's a liquid; at that point it is less dense, yet it is still iron.

The physical properties describe the behaviors of a substance. They can change according to the condition of the environment but not the chemical nature of the substance. For example, molten sulfur and solid sulfur are two different physical states but the chemical composition is still the same. Another example is oil: it can be a solid, liquid, or even a gas, but its chemical composition (the hydrocarbons) remains the same, and so are the physical properties.
