Hares in Scotland grow a white coat in winter because this helps them to camouflage in snow covered habitats. Snow cover can be more prevalent in Scotland due to the higher elevation and lower temperatures which are better suited for the formation of snow. Hares in the south of England do not typically grow a white coat in winter because snow cover is much less prevalent and there is not as much of a need for camouflage in their environment.
