The separation of P-waves and S-waves on a seismogram recorded 4500 km from the epicenter of an earthquake is six minutes. On another seismogram that separation is seven minutes. Is the second station closer to or more distant from the epicenter? Explain.

Answers

The second station is closer to the epicenter compared to the first station. This is because P-waves travel faster than S-waves, so the farther away from the epicenter the time required for the P-waves and S-waves to separate will be longer. The shorter time separation of P-waves and S-waves indicates that the second station is located closer to the epicenter.
