A child in a boat throws a 5.30 kg package out horizontally with a speed of 10 m/s, see the figure. Calculate the velocity of the boat immediately after, assuming it was initially at rest. The mass of the child is 26.0 kg and that of the boat is 55.0 kg What is the magnitude?

Answers

The magnitude of the velocity of the boat immediately after the package is thrown is 0.84 m/s. This is because the momentum of the package (53.0 kg * 10 m/s) must be balanced by the momentum of the boat and the child combined (55.0 kg + 26.0 kg). Thus the final velocity of the boat is the momentum of the package divided by the combined mass of the boat and child. This is 53.0 kg * 10 m/s / (55.0 kg + 26.0 kg) = 0.84 m/s.
