Purpose of the Australian Aid Program

The Australian Aid Program is the Australian Government’s official overseas aid and development program. It works to eliminate extreme poverty and provides assistance to countries through Australian businesses, volunteering and government initiatives. The program also contributes to long-term stability, economic growth, and well-being of people in developing countries, as well as to Australia’s national interest. It is rooted in the belief that all people have a right to a decent standard of living, and works to improve the economic opportunities, healthcare, education, nutrition and basic human rights for people in the world’s poorest nations. The Australian Government provides assistance through a variety of mechanisms, such as providing capital for program aid, building infrastructure, providing technical advice and capacity building, assisting developing countries with humanitarian assistance, and helping to strengthen their public sector capacity.
