Plan of Church of the Dormition

Answers

The Church of the Dormition is a traditional Russian Orthodox church located in Moscow’s Medieval city center. The plan of the church includes five distinct parts: the nave, the aisles, the altar, the dome, and the bell tower. At the center of the nave is a large gold iconostasis, or wall of religious icons. This iconostasis separates the nave from the altar located at the eastern end of the church. The aisles wrap around the outside of the nave and lead to two vestibules located in front of the altar. The aisles contain several other shrines, including a chapel dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. The large dome of the church is located at the center of the building and is decorated with religious frescoes. Finally, the bell tower is located the corner of the building and is the tallest feature of the church. This tower is used to house the bells used during the Divine Liturgy.
