The Pre-Socratic philosophers made various attempts to solve the problem of the One and the Many, but not all were successful. The philosopher Parmenides of Elea argued for the existence of an underlying unity of the universe, proposing that reality is an unchanging and unified whole, rejecting the idea of plurality and dynamism. However, other Pre-Socratics, such as Anaximander, proposed that reality consists of an infinite plurality of elements and forces, arguing that change was an integral part of this ever-shifting universe. As such, both of these views are still debated and argued in the present day, showing that the Pre-Socratics were unable to come to a conclusion on the problem of the One and the Many.
