Metropolitan Statistical Area

A Metropolitan Statistical Area is an area that includes one or more counties and includes a core urban area of 50,000 or more people. This area typically includes the population within a 25-mile radius of the core area, including other towns and cities. Metropolitan Statistical Areas are used by the U.S. Census Bureau as a way to measure urban and rural populations, and also as a tool for conducting research on population trends and economic structures.
