1. The two groups being compared must be independent of each other. 2. The data must be normally distributed or at least follow the assumption of the Central Limit Theorem. 3. Both samples should be drawn from the same "population". 4. The data should be continuous and not categorical. 5. Homogeneity of variances needs to be assumed (Levene's test).
