We can check if the exponential model is appropriate by looking at the quality of the fitted model. Checking the goodness-of-fit of the data to the exponential model can be done through the use of certain methods such as the coefficient of determination (R2), or by visually inspecting the residuals of the model. If the R2 value is too low then the model is likely not an appropriate fit for the given data. Additionally, if the residuals appear scattered in relation to the model then it is likely not an appropriate fit.
