One of the results of the reform efforts spurred on by the Second Great Awakening of the 1820's was a surge in Christian missionary activity. During this period, Protestant denominations in the United States embarked on missionary work throughout the world. This mission work was especially focused on freeing African slaves and spreading Christian values in formerly non-Christian nations. In addition to missionary work, the Second Great Awakening also prompted other reforms such as a backlash against alcohol consumption, expansion of education programs in the United States, temperance reform, and a wave of anti-slavery sentiment.
