The rise of Nazism in Germany in the early 1930s was driven primarily by the economic hardships of the Great Depression, public disillusionment with traditional democratic politicians, and the charisma and unrestrained promises of its leader, Adolf Hitler. Germany was in a state of great economic and social turmoil after its crippling defeat in World War I. High unemployment, collapsing industries and hyperinflation left much of the population feeling angry, frustrated and disillusioned. At the same time, the traditional politicians were unable to effectively respond to the crisis. This created an opening for Hitler and his Nazi party, a radical anti-Semitic and anti-communist movement, which promised to restore Germany to its former glory. Hitler was a charismatic leader and the party appealed to many people with its extreme nationalist and totalitarian rhetoric. The Nazi’s won a major victory in the 1932 elections, and they quickly become the dominant force in Germany’s government. Thus, it is clear that a combination of economic, social and political factors helped to bring the Nazi party to power in Germany in the 1930s.
