You are running two applications on your computer. You highlight some text in a word document and initiate the copy command. You then go to paste the text into a publisher document. Where is the text temporarily stored after it is copied? They used to call that area of computer memory the "clipboard". I am not sure what they call it now.

The clipboard is still the name for the area of computer memory where copied text and images are temporarily stored. The clipboard is technically implemented as a special type of memory buffer or data structure. It works by receiving information from one application, storing it, and then "pasting" it into another application when requested. This is why the paste command works between two applications: because the data is stored in the clipboard.
