Mitochondria are essential for several important kidney functions, as they are essential for providing energy and are a key factor in cellular respiration. The increased number of mitochondria allow for a greater production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of cells. This ATP is then used for various processes in the kidney, including active transport, filtration, and the secretion of hormones and toxins. In addition, mitochondria produce the antioxidants that keep oxidative stress at a low level, key in maintaining kidney health. Therefore, increased number of mitochondria helps to ensure the efficient and healthy functioning of the kidney.
