The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is an intergovernmental international organization made up of 10 Southeast Asian countries. It was created in 1967 as a response to increasing regional tension due to growing political, economic, and social interdependence. ASEAN countries aim to promote stability and prosperity in Southeast Asia, prevent conflicts through diplomacy, and further economic and socio-cultural integration among its members. Key initiatives include maintaining peace and security, protecting human rights, promoting trade and investment, and encouraging regional tourism. The organization holds annual summits and publishes the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint in 2015 to enhance regional economic cooperation.
