As reservoirs are depleted, the remaining resources are often small and scattered and the oil is generally of a lower quality. The total potential of an oil basin is likely to have already been found, making it more challenging for major new discoveries to be made. Even with advanced technology, the chances of discovering a giant field become increasingly slim.
