Scgraffito is a type of street art which produces images by scratching through a layer of paint to reveal the underlying color. It originated in the 16th century in Italy and is an abbreviation of ‘schizzo a graffito’, meaning ‘a painted scratch’. It is a form of painting or image-making that utilizes the physical properties of the underlying surface and a sharp implement, usually a knife. The scratched lines create a contrast of color and texture with the existing background. Scgraffito can often be seen as a wall or other surface that has been scratched with a design or pattern in one or more colors.
