At the police station, the police are obliged to inform the subject of their rights, including the right to remain silent, the right to legal advice and the right to contact a relative or friend. If a suspect wishes to remain silent, the police must respect their decision. If the person does not have access to or cannot afford legal representation, the police will be obliged to provide them with access to an appropriate lawyer. Any delays that occur when a suspect wishes to exercise their right to legal representation should take into account the detention period limits established by the law. During detention, searches are permissible where necessary, as well as swab tests and finger-printing. However, the searching must be reasonable and conducted in accordance with police regulations. Informed consent should be obtained in all cases, and the search must be conducted in private and with respect for the detainee's dignity.
