Why did slavery start in the United States?

The main reason was that people captured in Africa as slaves were a cheap labor force, and Africa was a limitless source of such labor force for Southern plantations. It is fair to say that African-American slaves helped to build the American economy - but in a wrong, twisted way, through exploitation by the white people.
