Math – sure, you can use it. Most people use some of it in life, getting by. But that math is basic arithmetic. The rest of i t-- the trig, calculus, abelian groups and so forth – why study it? Why care?Math to me is useful in a far more significant way than knowing which is the cheapest detergent per ounce (and, by the way, if you look at the price tag in the store, they will often tell you the price per ounce so you don't need math there).Math is useful in being exercise for the mind. If you do a lot of math, you will have a strong mind. It is like spending time lifting weights, running, stretching – all these things make you a great athlete. If you work through various nooks and crannies of math, you will develop a nice mental horsepower, suitable to many problems from biology to anthropology. The type of utility that results helps with strategy, imagination, creativity, analysis, deep and great things that can help build a life worth living.
